On Thursday, 25 February, Fresno County Sheriff's Deputy Joel Wahlenmaier,48, a 12-year veteran of the department, and Deputy Mark Harris were attempting to serve a warrant on a suspect wanted for arson in the town of Minkler, California. As they entered the suspect's mobile home, the suspect opened fire with a rifle, killing Wahlenmaier and wounding Harris, whose injuries were not life-threatening.
After calls for assistance, Reedley Police Officer Javier Bejar, 28, a former Marine and five-year veteran of the department, was shot with a scoped rifle as he crouched behind his unit, seeking cover. He remained on life support for several days until it was clear that he would not improve.
The PoS suspect was ultimately killed by a self-inflicted head wound during the ensuing shootout, where more than 500 shots were fired.
Deputy Wahlenmaier is survived by his wife a daughter and his parents. The ‘Joel Wahlenmaier Family Memorial Fund’has been established for those wishing to donate. Persons may send their contributions care of the Fresno Deputy Sheriff’s Association, 1360 Van Ness Ave, Fresno CA, 93721.
Officer Bejar is survived by his wife and other family members. The Reedley Police Officer's Association (POA) has set-up the Javier Bejar Support Fund at Chase Banks. Contributions can be made at any Chase Bank Location.
In an unrelated incident, San Diego County Sheriff's Deputy Ken Collier, 39, a 12-year veteran of the department, was killed during the pursuit of a drunk driver who was driving the wrong way on the freeway when his unit struck a bridge abutment and tumbled hundreds of feet down an embankment. A dispatcher riding with Collier survived the crash with minor injuries.
The suspect was arrested a short time later and charged with vehicular manslaughter, evading arrest and drunk driving.
Deputy Collier is survived by his fiancee and other family members. A memorial fund has been set up for his family. Donations for the Kenneth J. Collier Memorial Fundcan be done at any branch of the San Diego County Credit Union.
